On this page you will find Mme. Smithanik's lessons for Applied Design & Science Technology. Typically the students have a 75 minute session with her every week. Keep watching this space as she adds her lessons! Don't forget to send her a video or some photos as you complete your creations!! [email protected]

2. WATCH the video "Patterns in the Sky" www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8c2e8AnC-4
3. BUILD a constellation viewer www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbeWysiM6lk
4. SHARE a picture of your project by emailing Mme. Smithanik or Mme. Hogan!!

WEEK FOUR (May 12th-19th)
Learning more about STARS
1. Did you know that you can see different constellations during the year? This is because the Earth moves around the sun. In the summer, you're looking in a different direction in space at night than in the winter. If you're curious to know what the night sky looks like in different times of the year, check out this star finder - https://astro-canada.ca/le_cherche_etoile-star_finder-eng Move the outer circle to align the date and time you want to view the stars and voila! Maybe you'll have a chance to star gaze one of these days. I like finding the Big Dipper because its easy to spot.
2. Even though humans have observed stars for thousands of years without fancy equipment, scientists and enthusiasts may use telescopes in an observatories to study the night sky. Check out this video from the University of Calgary to see what an observatory looks like and how they're sharing this with students in their community (scroll down to see the video). The video also touches on the Indigenous People's connection to the night sky. See if you can spot different tools that students use to study the sky and compare their different sizes. https://science.ucalgary.ca/rothney-observatory/community/first-nations-skylore If you scroll down the website, you can also click learn about different Indigenous sky stories in the Alberta region.
3. Share 3 things you learned by writing me a note. Have fun!

WEEK FIVE (May 19-26)
This week, we are slowly going to switch gears - moving away from patterns in the sky and moving toward patterns in the landscape. I attached a review sheet outlining the past couple of weeks. Please take a look.
We will start this week with a simple brainstorming activity:
1. REMEMBER that we see patterns in the sky every day. (We see the sun appear in the day and the moon and stars at night).
2. THINK of patterns you may see in the sky as the year goes on. (Compare how the days are different in the winter, spring, summer, and fall.) Patterns in the sky affect the patterns we see on land.
3. DRAW what you might have seen outside your window/neighbourhood this past winter and what you see now in the spring. (In those two seasons, what do the trees look like? Do you see more plants/flowers? How about animals?)
Here's a video to get the juices flowing:

Spring Outside: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=143&v=yQCb0BZuTSY&feature=emb_logo
4. SUBMIT a photo of your drawing. I look forward to seeing them!

Hi everyone! With schools re-opening next week, my schedule at the school has changed. This is likely the last online post from me but perhaps I'll see some of you next week. If I don't see you in June, I hope you have a great summer!
1. REMEMBER we can see patterns in the sky such as the sun appearing during the day and the moon and stars at night.
2. We can also see patterns in the land. These are evident as we observe seasons. Seasons repeat every year and each season bring about distinct changes in the land.
3. WATCH this video and list the signs of spring you can see - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih0ZwPxLUZE
4. SEND the list to me and include a picture or a note of your favourite spring activity that you do with your family.
